This poem was written a long time ago, and there is an oil painting that I did around the same time the goes with it.  The poem was inspired by a dream I had.  According to one website, which I will not name, since I believe their entire operation is a scam (I still haven't received the copy of the book I ordered), this poem is supposedly published in a collection of poetry from years ago.  Either way, it's one of my personal favorites.  I'll be posting some of my other personal favorites soon.

Happy Reading,
Darkwolf

This particular poem was written a long time ago, during my first marriage, when I thought I was about to become a father for the first time.  Due to various circumstances, I didn't become a dad at that time.  Of course, I kept the song and now I occasionally sing it to our baby boy.

Enjoy!

I guess that if there's any one way to classify most of my poetry, it would be considered "romantic", though some of it is far from being so.  Some of it is dark, some depressive, some angry, and some of it inspirational.  This particular piece, however, definitely fits into the romantic category.  I honestly can't remember what inspired it.  I hope you enjoy it.

This poem is one of those odd ones that was born from a single word or phrase and grew from there.  Many years ago, before the internet was in widespread use, I met someone online and they used the nickname Angelfire, or Angelfyre, I forget which.  I thought it was an interesting nickname and after a few days of the name rolling around in my head, I sat down and the following poem is what finally made its way onto the paper.

The story behind this poem is one of recovery from depression and a traumatic experience in my life.  It was written while I was dealing with the emotional turmoil that came from the divorce between myself and my first wife.  It was a difficult time, one of the worst times of my life.  This poem is probably the most accurate writing ever set to paper of how I deal with negative emotions and emotional pain.  The whirlwind is a metaphor for the chaos of life which is sometimes a maddening and terrifying thing, but no matter how bad it gets, I always pick up the pieces and jump right back in.  I hope that reading this will help others who are going through bad times to pick themselves up, and do the same.

What Have You Done? PDF Print E-mail

This is the last poem I have written in years.  So, as of this posting, it's been eight years since I last wrote poetry.  All of my other poetry was written several years prior, some dating back all the way to my days in high school.  Before this final poem, I was quit prolific in writing poetry, and I promise, I'll post more in the near future, maybe even my entire collection, if I can find it all.

However, I'm guessing that at least a few of you are wondering why on earth did my poetic writings suddenly cease?  Believe it or not, it was because I finally found what I'd spent my entire life searching for.  It was for that one thing that almost all of my prior poetry had been written for.  Oh, there were a few poems I wrote while angry and some I wrote when life just seemed to be so much of a burden that I wanted to give up, but those were only a fraction of what my poety was really all about.

This is a pretty short piece, written during my senior year in high school.  As I'm sure you can tell by the mood of the piece, I was going through a pretty difficult and lonely situation at the time.  These times, like all things, must pass.

Honestly, I'm not sure how to even begin to describe this piece.  It is macabre, energetic, dark, and passionate all at the same time.  Some might call it depressive, a cry for help, or something else.  However, it is not a cry for help or even a death wish.  It was written during a rather manic period, and I think I was wrapped up in reading some of Anne Rice's works at the time, but I might be mistaken.  Either way, there is a definite gothic flavor to the piece.  Whether or not it is to your liking, is up to you to decide.  I had to do a little editing of this version, as the only copy I can find is a rough draft version,  but the changes are superficial.

This poem is actually the lyrics to a song written by myself and an old friend sometime around 1990.  Unfortunately, I haven't seen this old friend in ages, since we lost contact long ago.  It's the only poetic work that I've ever collaborated with anyone on.  I won't include his name here, since I have no means of contacting him to get his permission.  However, I've always enjoyed this work because of its continous conflictions and the message that these conflictions bare.

The next few poems that I plan to post were all written in 1995.  It was a rough time for me.  At the time, I had no idea I had bipolar syndrome, and honestly, with all the turmoil in my life going on, I doubt even the best psychiatrist could have found it.  It was a year of changes and most of them were pretty big changes.  My first marriage had just gone down the toilet, I was swinging from near suicidal depression to raging mania.  I'll give a little more background as I continue to add the poetry.  It'll take up less space that way.  Besides, as you read these following poems you'll be witnessing. in my own writing, the metamorphosis of my soul.

This particular poem is one of hope and longing.

A Little Background History PDF Print E-mail

There won't be a poem accompanying this post.  I decided that rather than toss in a dash of history here and there as I introduce each poem, I'd just post it all at once.  I'll be honest with you, this isn't that easy for me to do.  Less than a handful of people have ever heard me recount this part of my life, and fewer still have ever heard me talk about how it affected me.

So, whether you're just curious, or just bored, read on to catch a glimmer of my soul, or just skip this part and go back to reading the poetry.  The choice is yours.

I guess the best place to start would be back in the late 1980's, during my high school years.  It was back around this time that I first had a dream, the subject of which would continue to repeat itself occasionally for many years to come.  It was a dream that not only affected my life in several ways, especially my love life, but that also opened up new avenues of personal introspection and philosophical exploration.  Yeah, yeah, I know, sounds kind of overdramatically deep when I put it into words, doesn't it?

"To Walk the Night" is a rather moody piece.  You'll notice here a reference to "the beast", which I often used as a metaphor for my "dark side".  This is one of the poems that was written as the Prodigal Son not long before the Insanity pseudonym was born.

Many of my poems weren't given a title when written and this is one of them.  I've already posted others that have finally been given a title, just so I can keep track of them all.

This one, however, could have had so many different names.  It's about hope, rebirth, and picking yourself up, brushing off the dust, and getting right back into the fight we call life.

As I've said in the past quite alot of my poetry leans toward the romantic side, and a good bit of it can be melancholy.  I've also said that some of it can be quite angry.  This piece is one of those angry poems that were born during those chaotic days following my first wife's exit from my life.

This is another angry poem written on the same day as Daughter of Lilith.  It was one of those times when the poetry rushed out of me like a flood and probably saved my sanity.  This is also the first time where I referred to myself as "The Ultimate Insanity", though this piece was signed using the "Prodigal Son" pseudonym.

This is potentially and probably the most unusual poem I ever wrote.  Written on the same day as Playhouse and Daughter of Lilith, this is the poem where "the ultimate insanity" was truly born.  After reading it, I think you can see why.  Even reading it again now, all these years later, I can still see the mania reflected here.

This is another one of those untitled poems that I had to give name to before posting here.  Unlike the anger reflected in the last three pieces I've posted, this one reflects the sudden swing back towards depression.  Oddly enough (unless you're bipolar), it was written the day after those last three poems.
